ABOUTThe Cooperative Winery of Vidigueira, Cuba and Alvito, founded in 1960, started its activity in 1963. It is the result of the dream and hard work of most of the wine producers from Vidigueira, Cuba and Alvito, based on tradition and reinvention, sustained by a know and remembered quality.Between the grapes of the winery are some of the best grape varieties of the region, kept through generations, with great emphasis on Antão Vaz, also know as «Vidigueira’s grape variety», producer of a unique white wine which is likely the origin of the well known white wine of Alentejo. The history of the winery is extended beyond its 50 years of existence, with old roots tangled with the history of the village itself, whose etymology, some say, is derived from «Videira» (vine), because of the abundant vineyards in its fertile lands. In 1519, Vidigueira was given to Vasco da Gama by D. Jaime, Duke of Bragança, with a contract ratified by charter of King Manuel I, marking the beginning of a profound relation of the village with the Gamas.
