Quinta da Alorna, was established by D. Pedro de Almeida.
After conquering the resistant Alorna Fort, in the neighbourhood of Goa, where he held the position of Viceroy, he received from the King of Portugal, D. João V, the title of 1st Marquis of Alorna.
D. Pedro de Almeida, was D. Leonor, IV Marquess of Alorna – the poetess Alcipe – grandfather’s. At that time (1723) the Estate, belonging to the Marquis of Alorna, was known as Quinta de Vale de Nabais.
Many years later, two of the daughters of D. Leonor sold the “Quinta dos Alorna” (as it was called) to the counts of Junqueira, and the heirs sold it at public auction, passing it on to Dr. Manuel Caroça – great-grandfather of the current shareholders – respectable dentist, merchandise broker and big business man who ended up becoming the sole owner of Quinta da Alorna.
