Italy tops the medal tally

The results of the latest Spring Tastings of the Grand International Wine Award MUNDUS show that the world of wine is expanding in new and unexpected ways.

“We saw a lot of new wines from Russia, Ukraine and Mexico,” said tasting director Christian Wolf. “This is clearly where the most new development is.” The wines were “very good,” he added, saying that in some cases the wines from new producing countries like China were “outstanding”.

The level of competition on global markets led to a record-breaking number of entries for the spring tasting – more than 6,700 wines, from more than 150 wine growing regions. The competition has grown so fast that Wolf said 70 new judges were added this year, for a total of 270 international wine experts, while the judging took place over six days. “It’s not fair to the wines if we don’t have more judges and tasting days,” he said. “We need to make sure judges aren’t tasting too many wines in one day, for the best results.”

While new countries were strongly represented, it was the established regions that won the majority of medals: Italy topped the charts with 647 medals in total, followed by Spain with 590, Portugal (322), Germany (290) and France (267). The New World also gave a good showing with Australia claiming 83 medals, followed by South Africa (45), Argentina (41), Chile (39) and the USA (16).

The highest award of the competition, Grand Gold, was awarded to two wines from Austraila and one from Argentina:

2014 The Visionary Cabernet Sauvigon from Wakefield/Taylors Wines, Australia

2014 Noble One Botrytis Semillon from De Bortoli Wines, Australia

2015 Barrel Selected Syrah from Pyros Wines, Argentina

Australia’s Kilikanoon (13 medals) and Argentina’s Penaflor (12 medals) were named best producers from the New World.

The medal winning wines are available to be tasted in the MUNDUS VINI tasting area at ProWein 2018. Wines that have one special awards will be honoured on the first day of the trade fair with a certificate presented by the board of MUNDUS VINI.
