MUNDUS VINI Spring Tasting 2021: results

Excellent wines defy the pandemic // MUNDUS VINI awards the best ones

Almost 3,000 wines from all over the world were awarded medals at the 28th MUNDUS VINI International Wine Awards in Neustadt, Germany. The great wine qualities in the competition convinced the jury of experts, who blindly and professionally tasted 7,300 wines from 39 wine-growing countries of the world on a total of 20 tasting days in small groups this year.

Five wine producers from overseas wine-producing countries were awarded as the “Best Producers” of the MUNDUS VINI Spring Tasting 2021:
Kilikanoon Wines from Australia is awarded 2 Grand Gold, 12 Gold and 3 Silver medals for their wines and the “Best Producer Australia”. Marisco Vineyards from New Zealand is awarded 8 Gold and 3 Silver medals for their wines and the “Best Producer New Zealand”. Delicato Family Wines with its 5 Gold and 4 Silver medals is the “Best Producer of the United States of America”. With 6 Gold and 1 Silver medal, Kleine Zalze is the “Best Producer South Africa” and Casa Silva is awarded 5 Gold and 1 Silver medal for their wines and the “Best Producer Chile”.

In total, MUNDUS VINI awarded 10 Grand Gold, 170 Gold and 110 Silver Medals to wines from overseas. This proves the high qualities produced by wine producers from overseas in the past years.

Most of the awards went to wineries from Australia (9 Grand Gold, 52 Gold and 16 Silver), followed by wineries from Chile (35 Gold, 19 Silver), South Africa (26 Gold, 26 Silver) and New Zealand (21 Gold, 16 Silver). Wines from the United States of America (a total of 32 medals), Argentina (15), China (10), Mexico (9), as well as from Peru (4) also impressed.

The best wine importer is GES Sorrentino, based in Delmenhorst, Germany whose wines were awarded 16 gold and 14 silver medals.

Particularly honoured at the Spring Tasting are the wines and winemakers who receive a "Best of Show" award. This is only awarded to the best wines in a category.

Among the best wines of the competition are Progreso Premium Malbec (Best of Show Argentina) from Bodega Canciller, 2019 Penny's Hill Skeleton Key Shiraz (Best of Show Australia red) from Galvanized Wine Group, 2020 Wakefield Chardonnay (Best of Show Australia white) from Taylors Wines, 2019 Angel's Secret Carmenère Gran Reserva (Best of Show Carmenère) from MONTES, 2017 Doña Bernarda (Best of Show Chile) from Viña Luis Felipe Edwards, Chateau Tinlot Yantai Changyu Dry Red Wine (Best of Show China), 2017 Gran Reserva Malbec (Best of Show Mexico) from Vinícola San Lorenzo, 2020 Tohu Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc (Best of Show New Zealand) from Kono Beverages, 2017 Kleine Zalze Family Reserve Shiraz (Best of Show South Africa red), 2019 KWV Roodeberg (Best of Show South Africa red in retail markets), 2018 Old Road Wine Co. anemos Chenin Blanc (Best of Show South Africa white), 2019 Private Selection Cabernet Sauvignon (Best of Show US red) from Robert Mondavi and 2019 Wente Morning Fog Chardonnay California (Best of Show US white).

From the traditional European wine-growing countries, the "Best of Show" list includes premium wines such as the "Best Vintage Champagne" (Rare Millésime 2008), the "Best Amarone della Valpolicella" (Ca dei Frati), the "Best Sherry" (Noé by González Byass) or “Best Riesling noble sweet” (2018 Hattenheimer Hassel Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese VDP.GROSSE LAGE from VPD.Weingut Georg-Müller-Stiftung).

The team around Director Degustation Christian Wolf did a real masterstroke in the weeks before and during the competition for the safe tasting that at the same time did justice to the high level of professionalism.

"I am proud of my team and incredibly grateful to our expert jury. In still difficult times, a current award from MUNDUS VINI is an important signal for wine producers all over the world. The quality of the wines was impressive again this year". Christian Wolf draws a first conclusion of this year's Spring Tasting.

The unofficial ranking of the best wine-producing countries is again led this year by Italy with 734 medals, closely followed by Spain with 708 medals. France with 327 medals also follows in third place, the quartet of the best wine-growing countries is completed by Germany with 245 and Portugal with 190 medals.

This year, the organiser of the competition, Meininger specialist publishing house, will hold the 2021 award ceremony virtually. Normally, the MUNDUS VINI board presents the certificates to the winemakers in person at the opening of the world's leading trade fair ProWein in Düsseldorf, which cannot take place this year.
