Top quality New World wines come up trumps

Over the four days of the 17th MUNDUS VINI Grand International Wine Award at the start of September an international jury of 150 experts awarded 33 "Grand Gold" medals, with a further 768 wines being awarded Gold medals and 858 winning Silver. Just over 4,300 wines from about 40 countries of origin had been entered for the summer tasting. The medals table is led by Italy (380), Germany (356) and Spain (271), followed by Portugal (145) and France (123).

Grand Gold and jury special prizes

The 33 Grand Gold medals awarded  – the absolute top category – include two Australian wines from Casella Wines, the 2007 Casella 1919 Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2008 Casella 1919 Cabernet Sauvignon which was also awarded the jury special prize for the Best Australian Red Wine at the summer tasting. KWV's 2011 The Mentors Orchestra Coastal Region also made it onto the winner's podium, as well as winning the jury special prize for Best South African Red Wine at the tasting.

Bremen-based Reidemeister & Ulrichs outshone its rivals as the German Importer of the Year by winning the most Gold and Silver medals in relation to the wines that it submitted.

The New World Producer of the Year is Casella Family Brands from Australia. The European Producer of the Year is from Portugal. Sogrape Vinhos achieved an overall medal haul of 1 Grand Gold, 8 Golds and 7 Silvers.
