A new record: Fattoria La Vialla has been named the best organic wine producer (international) for the fifth time; the Schwarztrauber winery named best organic wine producer (national) for the fourth time

For the tenth time, the Grand International Wine Award MUNDUS VINI and BIOFACH, the world’s leading trade fair for organic food, issued invitations to the Grand International Organic Wine Award MUNDUS VINI BIOFACH, with the winery Schwarztrauber from Neustadt in the Palatinate and Fattoria La Vialla in Tuscany taking the top spots. As such, Schwarztrauber submitted the best collection (national) for the fourth time. Fattoria La Vialla was honoured by the international jury as the best organic producer, with the best collection (international), for the fifth time. Therefore, both wineries have achieved a record result.

A total of 652 certified organic wines were tasted in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse, with the best ones awarded Silver or Gold medals and even the highly coveted Grand Gold medal. Overall, the 49 members of the international expert jury presented three highly coveted Grand Gold medals, 136 Gold medals and 138 Silver medals.

The highest award, Grand Gold, was presented three times by the jury. The awards go to:

  • Portugal: Sociedade Agrícola Herdade Do Lagos: 2016 HDL Reserva Seleção Vinho Regional Alentejano
  • Spain: Viñedo Ruiz Jimenez: 2011 Pago de Valcaliente Reserva DOCa Rioja Baja
  • Tuscany: Fattoria La Vialla: 2013 Vin Santo del Chianti DOC Riserva

The Spanish organic winegrowers won the 2019 unofficial country comparison with 73 medals, followed by Italy (71 medals) and Germany (66 medals).

As well as the major European wine-producing countries of Germany, Italy, Spain and France, other participating wines came from countries including Australia, Austria, Chile, Greece, Hungary, Luxembourg, Portugal and South Africa.

Director of Tasting Christian Wolf: ‘Over the past ten years, MUNDUS VINI BIOFACH has established itself as the gold standard for rating certified organic wines. This year, we were once again impressed by the improved quality and variety in the selection of organic wines. Alongside organic wines from traditional origins and classic grape varieties, an especially positive development is being witnessed in terms of grape varieties cultivated especially for organic viticulture, which can better meet the plant protection challenges of organic cultivation.’

The Grand International Organic Wine Award MUNDUS VINI BIOFACH is a competition held by the Grand International Wine Award MUNDUS VINI and is open exclusively to certified organic wines from all over the world. It is carried out in association with BIOFACH in accordance with the international tasting scheme of the OIV. MUNDUS VINI was founded 18 years ago and is one of the most important wine competitions in the world.

The winners of the Grand International Organic Wine Award MUNDUS VINI BIOFACH 2019 will be announced at BIOFACH, the leading international trade fair for organic food (13–16.2.2019 at the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg). The awards ceremony was held on 14 February 2019 at the ‘Experience the World of Wine’ event at BIOFACH.
