Australia number one in overseas category // Kilikanoon Wines and Bodegas Salentein crowned best overseas wineries // Over 300 wines win awards
Following the awarding of 37 Grand Gold, 1,487 Gold and 1,358 Silver medals, the 24th Grand International Wine Award MUNDUS VINI has now drawn to a close. 260 wine experts from 50 countries gathered at the six-day tasting to blind-taste and assess around 7,200 wines from 156 wine-growing regions.
Among the 300 award-winning wines from overseas, Australia came out top with 82 medals (55 Gold, 27 Silver), followed by South Africa with 56 medals (26 Gold, 29 Silver) and Chile with 46 medals (18 Gold, 28 Silver). China came in fourth place with 40 medals, while New Zealand ranked fifth with 26 medals.
The two best overseas wineries are Kilikanoon Wines from Australia, with 16 medals (12 Gold, 4 Silver), and Bodegas Salentein from Argentina, whose wines were awarded 7 Gold and 3 Silver medals.
The competition also marked the first-time entry of wines from China, which impressed MUNDUS VINI experts from all over the world. A total of one Grand Gold for the Chateau Changyu Moser XV 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon dry red wine, as well as 25 Gold and 14 Silver medals were awarded – meaning more than half of the wines submitted received an award.
Christian Wolf, Director Degustation, MUNDUS VINI: “The quality of the wines up for assessment at this year’s Spring Tasting impressed our jury of experts. We witnessed a fine mix of current vintages and high-quality wines offering a good level of maturity. Particularly pleasing were the variety of countries of origin and the fact that well-known wine-growing nations such as Australia, Chile and South Africa are now being joined by emerging nations such as China. We are very much looking forward to seeing what the future holds.”
In the unofficial country competition for the best quality wines, Italy once again overtook Spain this year, scooping 678 awards (12 Grand Gold, 312 Gold, 354 Silver) and thus the most medals. Spain came in a close second with 623 awards (5 Grand Gold, 362 Gold, 256 Silver), while France ranked third with 343 medals (9 Grand Gold, 189 Gold and 145 Silver). This was followed by Portugal with 295 medals and Germany with 243 medals.
With 42 medals (19 Gold, 23 Silver), Moldova tops the list of wines from lesser-known countries of origin. The list also includes wines from Bulgaria, Macedonia, the Russian Federation, Turkey and Hungary.
Around 600 of the award-winning wines at the MUNDUS VINI Spring Tasting will be presented to trade visitors at the world’s largest trade fair for wines and spirits, ProWein in Düsseldorf, from 17 to 19 March 2019. On the first day of the trade fair, the Board of MUNDUS VINI will hold an award-ceremony in honour of wine producers whose wines have received a “Best of Show” award.
The best overseas wines include the Bodegas Salentein 2015 Numina Cabernet Franc (Best of Show, Argentina), the Schild Estate 2015 Ben Schild Reserve Shiraz (Best of Show, Australia red), the Kilikanoon 2016 Mort’s Reserve Riesling (Best of Show, Australia white) as well as the Vinultra 2015 Little Beauty Black Edition Pinot Noir (Best of Show, New Zealand red) and the 2018 Tohu Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc produced by Kono Beverages (Best of Show, New Zealand white).

About MUNDUS VINI
MUNDUS VINI was founded 18 years ago by the Meininger Verlag, and from the beginning has been one of the most important wine competitions in the world. The 11,000 wines that are submitted every year are clear proof of the importance this competition has now achieved in Germany and all over the world. They are evaluated using the 100-point system of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV). Only the top 40 per cent of wines submitted to the competition receive medals for their quality.
