MUNDUS VINI Summer Tasting 2018: results

New World wines come up trumps // Australia the most successful overseas contender // Casella Family Brands and Delicato Family Vineyards nominated the most successful producers

Having distributed numerous Grand Gold, Gold and Silver awards, the 23rd Grand International Wine Award MUNDUS VINI has now drawn to a close. At this year’s Summer Tasting, 4,311 wines from all over the world were blind tasted, reviewed and rated by 175 expert judges from 40 countries.

At this year’s Summer Tasting, wines from overseas once again proved that they are amongst the best in the world: 3 Grand Gold, 81 Gold and 101 Silver awards went to wines from Australia, Chile, New Zealand, the USA and Argentina.

The most successful overseas producers at the Summer Tasting were the Casella Family Brand from Australia with 1 Grand Gold, 14 Gold and 11 Silver medals and Delicato Family Vineyards from the USA with 2 Gold and 8 Silver medals.

The highest accolade of Grand Gold went to three Australian wines: the 2015 Nest Egg
Chardonnay from the Bird in Hand Winery (Best of Show Australia white), the 2015 The Stocks Shiraz Single Vineyard from Woodstock Wine Estate (Best of Show Australia red) and the Classic Liqueur Muscat Morris Wines from Casella Family Brands.

Italy once again won the country competition for the best wines at this year’s Summer Tasting, with 483 medals, followed by Spain with 309 and Germany in third place with 293 medals. The quintet of top European producers is completed by Portugal with 154 medals and France with 114 medals.

Australia once again made its mark with a total of 87 medals. The other overseas winners include Chile and South Africa with 26 medals each, New Zealand (19), the USA (17) and Argentina (10).

Wines from Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belgium, Taiwan and Thailand also made it on to the award list.

The award for the best importer at the Summer Tasting went to Ardau Weinimport from Troisdorf in Germany: the wines imported by Ardau from Argentina, Spain, Portugal and Italy won 10 Gold and 14 Silver medals.

The best wines in the competition include the Krug Grande Cuvée 166ème Edition (Best of Show Champagne), the 2009 Bosan Riserva Amarone della Valpolicella Classico from Gerardo Cesari (Best of Show Amarone della Valpolicella), the 2014 Craft Series The Pioneer Chardon-nay from Marisco Vineyards (Best of Show New Zealand), the 2014 Quinta do Pego Vinhas Velhas Douro DOP (Best of Show Douro) and the 2017 Deidesheimer Kieselberg Riesling dry VDP.Erste Lage from the Weingut Geheimer Rat Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan (Best of Show Riesling dry).

A total of 12 Grand Gold, 600 Gold and 1,133 Silver medals were awarded at the MUNDUS VINI Summer Tasting 2018.
