MUNDUS VINI BIOFACH 2018: results

Italy and Germany produce top organic wines // Schlossgut Hohenbeilstein VDP winery is the best organic wine producer

The two best organic wineries of the year 2018 are from Germany and Italy. For the first time, the Württemberg Schlossgut Hohenbeilstein VDP winery has been named the best German organic winery while Fattoria La Vialla, from the Italian wine growing area of Tuscany, has this year been recognised as the best international organic winery for the fourth time.

For the ninth time, the Grand International Wine Award MUNDUS VINI and BIOFACH, the world’s leading trade fair for organic food, issued invitations to the Grand International Organic Wine Award MUNDUS VINI BIOFACH, where over 550 certified organic wines were sampled and the best ones were awarded Silver, Gold and the highly coveted Grand Gold medals. The official award ceremony will take place during the BIOFACH trade fair in Nuremberg on 15 February 2018.

The highest award of Grand Gold was given out three times – once each to Germany, France and Spain – by the jury consisting of around 60 people. Ludwig Knoll (Würzburg) was pleased about the award received for its 2016 Stettener Stein Riesling ice wine, produced in the Franconia region of Germany. The 2015 Château Tour Calon Premier des Tours from Lateyron (Bordeaux) and the 2002 Fino Bio Pedro Ximénez from Bodegas Robles (Montilla-Moriles) were internationally honoured with Grand Gold awards.

A total of 109 wines were able to prove their exceptional quality, which won them the Gold medal, while the international jury awarded Silver to 122 wines.

As well as the major European wine-producing countries of Germany, Italy, Spain and France, other participating wines came from countries including Greece, Chile, Austria, South Africa, Mexico, Poland and Bulgaria and offered exceptional organic wine quality. With a total of 67 medals, the Italian wine growers came ahead of Germany (65), Spain (51) and France (33) in the unofficial country comparison.
