MUNDUS VINI BIOFACH 2017: Results

Hat trick: Schwarztrauber winery and Fattoria La Vialla once again voted the best organic wine producers

For the eighth time, the Grand International Wine Award MUNDUS VINI and BIOFACH, the world's leading trade fair for organic food, issued invitations to the Grand International Organic Wine Award MUNDUS VINI BIOFACH: just over 500 certified organic wines were sampled on the premises of the Meininger publishing company in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse in Germany, and the 202 best ones were awarded Silver, Gold and the highly coveted Grand Gold medals. The official presentation ceremony will take place during the BIOFACH trade fair in Nuremberg on 16 February 2017.

To date, the 50 jurors have only awarded Grand Gold, the highest award, four times, twice to German and twice to Italian vintners. The Fitz-Ritter winery in Bad Dürkeim in Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate is delighted to receive Grand Gold for its 2015 Ungsteiner Herrenberg Riesling, as is the Fürst Hohenlohe Oehringen vineyard in Württemberg for its 2013 Verrenberger Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese.

International awards were made to the Italian wine producer Enoitalia of Veneto for its 2015 Alberto Nani Prosecco Spumante extra dry, and Fattoria Ispoli of Tuscany for its 2011 Chianti Classico Riserva.

A further 98 wines showed exceptional quality, which won them the Gold medal, while the international jury awarded Silver to 100 wines.

As well as the major European wine-producing countries of Germany, Italy, Spain and France, other participating wines came from countries including Portugal, Chile, South Africa, Argentina, Greece, Bulgaria, Austria and Hungary.

In the unofficial country comparison, the 2017 winners were the organic wine producers of Germany, followed by Italy and Spain. A total of 87 of the 162 German organic wines submitted received medals. With 36 awards, this year the producers from the Palatinate were clearly well ahead of their colleagues from Württemberg (14), Franconia (11) and Rhine Hesse (10) in the national medals table. And with a total of 87 medals, the German vintners came ahead of Italy (52), Spain (29) and France (16).

Two old favourites were once again the most successful this year, and both also enjoyed the added pleasure of a hat trick: the Schwarztrauber winery of Neustadt-Mussbach in the Palatinate and Fattoria La Vialla of Tuscany again had the best collections (nationally and internationally), and were quite rightly voted the best organic producers by the international jury.

The Grand International Organic Wine Award MUNDUS VINI BIOFACH is a competition that was set up by the Grand International Wine Award MUNDUS VINI, now in existence for 17 years, exclusively for certified organic wines from all over the world. It is carried out in association with BIOFACH in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse in accordance with the international tasting scheme of the OIV. With over 10,000 wines sampled most recently, MUNDUS VINI is one of the biggest international wine competitions in the world.

The winners of the MUNDUS VINI BIOFACH 2017 organic wine award will be announced at the BIOFACH, the leading international trade fair for organic food (15-18.02.2017 at the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg). The awards will be presented at 4 pm on 16 February in Hall 7 (Stand 841).
